The Edinburgh Theoretical Historical Linguistics (ETHL) Summer School ran from 22–26 June 2026 at the University of Edinburgh and was attended by students from around the world. As a venue focused on the interaction between theoretical (generative) and historical linguistics, the ETHL Summer School brought together research in historical syntax, phonology, and morphology to address the relationship between all components of grammar and diachronic change.

Our curriculum covered syntax, phonology, and their interface from a theoretical-historical perspective, as well as the philosophy of theoretical historical linguistics. Outside the classroom, ETHL offered a strong social programme that encouraged students and teachers to interact in a more casual setting. Overall, the ETHL Summer School was an enjoyable event that provided a unique opportunity for formal historical phonologists and syntacticians at all career stages to learn from one another.
